Error message when you try to create a data analysis view in Project Server 2007: "Failed to connect to Analysis Service server"

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a data analysis view in Microsoft Office Project Server 2007, you receive the following error message:
Failed to connect to Analysis Service server. Verify the server name and try again.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services 9.0 OLE DB Provider is not installed on the computer that is running Microsoft Project Web Access.
  • The Analysis Services version is version 2005.
This issue may also occur if the Access data sources across domains security setting in Microsoft Internet Explorer is set to Disable.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must install Analysis Services 9.0 OLE DB Provider or a later version of the OLE DB provider. Analysis Services 9.0 OLE DB Provider is included in the Feature Pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

To download the Feature Pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2005, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d09c1d60-a13c-4479-9b91-9e8b9d835cdc&displaylang=en (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d09c1d60-a13c-4479-9b91-9e8b9d835cdc&displaylang=en)
Make sure that you select the package that applies to the operating system that you are running, as follows:
  • For x86-based computers, select X86 Package (SQLServer2005_ASOLEDB9.msi).
  • For x64 Edition-based computers, select X64 Package (SQLServer2005_ASOLEDB9_x64.msi).
  • For Itanium-based computers, select IA64 Package (SQLServer2005_ASOLEDB9_ia64.msi).
If the Access data sources across domains security setting in Internet Explorer is set to Disable, you must set this setting to Enable for the given security zone that you use to connect to Project Web Access. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab, click the zone that you use to connect to the Office Project Server 2007, and then click Custom Level.
  3. Under Access data sources across domains, select Enable.

Note If you set the security setting to Prompt, you cannot use the Office Web Components when you create a data analysis view.
