Error message during the SharePoint Server 2007 installation process: "The data location path is too long"

SYMPTOMS

When you type a data location path during the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 installation process, you may receive the following error message:
The data location path is too long. Enter a path with fewer than 155 characters.
You receive this error message even if the data location path that you typed has fewer than 155 characters.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Setup program for SharePoint Server 2007 supports a data location path that has 139 or fewer characters. Because file names will be associated with this path, we recommend that you use a data location path that has 115 or fewer characters.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
