Error message when you try to create a site collection by using a site template in the top-level site template gallery in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0: "The template you have selected is invalid or cannot be found"
Consider the following scenario.
- You use an existing site template to create a new site collection in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.
- The site template is associated with a workflow.
- You move the site template to the top-level site template gallery.
- You try to create another new site collection by using the site template in the top-level site template gallery.
- The user account that you use when you try create the second new site collection is not the same account that is used by the application pool identity.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
The template you have selected is invalid or cannot be found
To resolve this problem, create a policy that grants Full Control permissions to the user account that you want to use to create the second new site collection. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
- On the Central Administration page, click Site Actions, and then click Site Settings.
- Under Galleries on the Site Settings page, click Site templates.
- On the Site Template Gallery page, click Settings, and then click Gallery Settings.
- Under Permissions and Management on the Customize Site Template Gallery page, click Permissions for this gallery.
- On the Permissions: Site Template Gallery page, click New, and then click Add Users.
- In the Users/Groups box on the Add Users: Site Template Gallery page, type the name of the user whom you want to add. In the Give Permission section, click to select the Full Control check box, select any additional options that you want, and then click OK.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
