Error messages in SharePoint Server 2007 when you try to add an import connection to import users from Active Directory services: "An error occurred while validating or updating the directory service connection"

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and you try to add an import connection to import users from Active Directory services, you receive one or more of the following error messages:
An error occurred while validating or updating the directory service connection. No connection was added.
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Please re-enter the domain name or explicitly specify the domain controller and search base.

CAUSE

This issue occurs in environments in which the DNS name differs from the NetBIOS domain name. For example, the Active Directory name is contos, and the NetBIOS domain name is contoso.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, enter the NetBIOS domain name in the Domain name text box on the Add Connection page in SharePoint Server 2007.
