Duplicate shortcuts or duplicate folders may appear in the Start menu after you upgrade Windows XP to Windows Vista or you upgrade Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade Microsoft Windows XP to Windows Vista or you upgrade Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, you may notice that duplicate shortcuts or duplicate folders appear in the Start menu. For example, you may notice that the Notepad shortcut has a duplicate. Additionally, both of these Notepad shortcuts may open the Notepad program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. For each shortcut or folder that has a duplicate, click the shortcut or the folder in the Start menu.
  2. If the shortcut or the folder starts the correct program or opens the correct folder, you can delete the other duplicate shortcut or duplicate folder.
  3. If the shortcut or the folder does not start the correct program or open the correct folder, you can delete the current shortcut or the current folder.

Note To delete a shortcut or a folder, right-click the shortcut or the folder, and then click Delete.
