Error message when you click the download link after you run an electronic software license purchasing program in Windows Vista: "Cannot Install License Package: This license package cannot be installed from the edition of Windows which you are using"

SYMPTOMS

In Windows Vista, when you click the download link after you run an electronic software license purchasing program, you receive the following error message:
Cannot Install License Package: This license package cannot be installed from the edition of Windows which you are using.
The license package is the digital license you receive with Windows Anytime Upgrade to upgrade a version of Windows Vista

CAUSE

This problem occurs because one of the following conditions is true:
  • You are trying to upgrade an operating system that is not activated.
  • You are trying to upgrade Windows Vista by using a path that is not valid. For example, you are trying to upgrade Windows Vista Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate, but your license lets you upgrade only Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows Vista Ultimate.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem if you have not activated Windows Vista, activate Windows Vista, and then run the electronic software license purchasing program again.

To resolve this problem if you are trying to upgrade Windows Vista by using a path that is not valid, obtain a refund for your current license. Then, purchase the correct license for the kind of upgrade that you want to perform.

MORE INFORMATION

You can update Windows Vista by using any of the following paths:
  • Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows Vista Ultimate
  • Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate
  • Windows Vista Business to Windows Vista Ultimate
When you click the download link after you run an electronic software license purchasing program, Internet Explorer recognizes the MIME type of the digital license. Therefore, the link starts the Software License Commerce Client.

APPLIES TO
  • Windows Vista Home Basic
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit Edition
  • Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit Edition
