You cannot format an unformatted DVD-RAM disc in Windows Vista

Important If you cancel the process of formatting a DVD-RAM media disc during a full format, the inserted disc cannot be ejected from the DVD drive, and then the disc seems to be corrupted. In fact, there is no real corruption of the disk. The disc appears to be corrupted because the full format is still going-on in the media disc. You can wait for about 20-60 minutes for the media to finish formatting, and then the media disc becomes usable again and the media disc is formatted completely.

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a blank unformatted DVD-RAM disc into a supported DVD-RAM drive on a Windows Vista-based computer, you are not prompted to format the disc. You cannot format the unformatted DVD-RAM disc in Windows Vista.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
