This article is intended for a beginning to intermediate computer user.

You may find it easier to follow the steps if you print this article first.

Preparing to install Windows Vista

Step 1: Determine the version of Microsoft Windows XP that the computer is running

  1. Click Start. Then click Run.
  2. Type winmsd.exe, and then click OK.
  3. In the Details pane, locate and notice the OS Name value in the Item column.
  4. In the Details pane, locate and notice the System Type value in the Item column. Determine the version of Microsoft Windows XP by using the following criteria:
    • If the System Type value is X86-based PC, the computer is running a 32-bit version of Windows XP.
    • If the System Type value is Itanium–based system, the computer is running a 64-bit version of Windows XP.

Step 2: Determine whether Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 is installed

  1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. On the General tab, verify that Service Pack 2 appears in the System area. If Service Pack 2 does not appear, Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is not installed.
