SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
  • You create an FTP Web site in IIS.
  • You upload a file to the FTP Web site.
  • The file that you uploaded is changed by a process that is not an FTP service process.
In this scenario, the Inetinfo.exe process stop responding.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the file has a Unicode name that is not usable by the FTP service. A Unicode name that is longer than 260 characters is considered unusable by the FTP service.

Note In some situations, the file name must be converted before the length is checked. For example, file names that contain non-ASCII characters must be converted before the length is checked. In these situations, the converted file name may be longer than the original file name, depending on the language of the file name. Therefore, you may encounter the problem that is described in this article even when the file name has fewer than 260 characters.
