Error message when you try to save a transaction in Microsoft Office Accounting Professional or in Microsoft Office Accounting Express: "The transaction date must be within an open fiscal year"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to save a transaction in Microsoft Office Accounting Professional or in Microsoft Office Accounting Express, you receive the following error message:
The transaction date must be within an open fiscal year. To create a new fiscal year, on the company menu, Click Manage Fiscal Year.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when one of the following conditions is true:
  • You try to save a transaction that is in a closed fiscal year.
  • You try to save a transaction that is in a fiscal year that has not yet been created.
  • You try to save a transaction that is in a fiscal year that is before the company start date.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Reopen a closed fiscal year

  1. On the Company menu, click Manage Fiscal Year.
  2. In the List of Periods of the Mange Fiscal Year dialog box, click the fiscal year that you want to reopen, and then click Open Fiscal Year.
  3. Click Close.

Method 2: Create a new fiscal year

  1. On the Company menu, click Mange Fiscal Year.
  2. In the Mange Fiscal Year dialog box, click New Fiscal Year.
  3. In the Create Fiscal Year dialog box, enter the fiscal year information, and then click OK.
  4. Click Close.

Method 3: Edit the start date of the company

  1. On the Company menu, click Mange Fiscal Year.
  2. In the Mange Fiscal Year dialog box, click Change Start Date.
  3. In the Start date field, type the start date of the first fiscal year.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click Yes to create the necessary fiscal years.
  6. Click Yes again to set the first valid posting date to the new start date.
  7. Click Close.
