Error message when you try to restore a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site collection that contains subsites: "The server connection timed out"

SYMPTOMS

You use the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Migration Tool (Smigrate.exe) to restore a Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site collection that contains subsites. However, after the top-level site collection is successfully restored, the restore process may appear to stop responding. Additionally, you receive the following error message for each subsite that you try to restore:
The server connection timed out.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You try to restore a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site collection that contains subsites.
  • Anonymous access is enabled on the Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) virtual server that hosts the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site collection.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, turn off anonymous access on the IIS virtual server, restore the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site collection, and then turn on anonymous access on the IIS virtual server. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. In the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager MMS snap-in, expand the IIS virtual server that hosts the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site, and then expand Web sites.
  3. Right-click the Web site that hosts the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site collection, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Directory Security tab.
  5. In the Authentication and access control section, click Edit.
  6. In the Authentication Methods dialog box, click to clear the Enable anonymous access check box, and then click OK two times.
  7. Restore the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site collection.
  8. In the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager MMS snap-in, right-click the Web site that hosts the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site collection, and then click Properties.
  9. Click the Directory Security tab.
  10. In the Authentication and access control section, click Edit.
  11. In the Authentication Methods dialog box, click to select the Enable anonymous access check box, and then click OK two times.
