When you use the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) to deploy updates to Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 client computers, the updates are not deployed successfully.
The operation to download the latest software updates is completed successfully as expected. However, the new updates are not added to the Wsuscan.cab file.
Therefore, you cannot deploy the updates to the client computers.
You experience this problem if the following conditions are all true:
- You use an earlier version of ITMU, such as ITMU Revision 2, to deploy software updates.
- ITMU does not remove previously downloaded updates.
- You have downloaded more than 64,000 files.
This problem occurs because of a limitation in versions of ITMU that are earlier than ITMU Revision 3. Earlier versions of ITMU use the Wsuscan.cab file to catalog downloaded files. The Wsuscan.cab file has a download limit of 64,000 files.
To resolve this problem, obtain and then install ITMU Revision 3. ITMU Revision 3 does not use the Wsuscan.cab file to catalog software updates. Instead, ITMU Revision 3 uses a new catalog file that is named Wsusscn2.cab. Wsusscn2.cab uses a different format than Wsuscan.cab. The Wsusscn2.cab file does not have a download limit of 64,000 files.
Notes- We recommend that you install the latest version of ITMU. This will help make sure that you can successfully download software updates after March 2007.
- IMTU versions that are earlier than Version 3 are not supported after March 2007. To obtain ITMU Revision 3, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
