The Systems Management Server 2003 "Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates" cannot detect recently released Microsoft software updates
The Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) cannot detect recently released Microsoft software updates. You receive the following error message:
Synchronization component failed: the synchronization component failed to update the Site Database for the catalog (type = Microsoft Update).
See the log file for details.
Also, the WUSSyncXML.log file contains the following error message:
Synchronizing updates from the catalog to the database.
UpdateWUSCatalog(18:37:19): error 0x80041001, Generic failure, SQL command failed: , returned from SMS_UpdatePrograms::PutInstance(UpdateID=2237)
This issue occurs when one of the following conditions is true:
- The ITMU scan package has been renamed.
- The default program for the ITMU scan package has been deleted and then re-created by using a different name.
If one of these conditions is true, the ITMU cannot detect the recently released Microsoft software updates.
Note By default, when you install the ITMU, the ITMU scan package name is Microsoft Updates Tool. Also, the default program name is Microsoft Updates Tool.
To resolve this issue, you can rename the ITMU scan package or rename the program by using the name that you specified when you installed the ITMU. Or, you can reinstall the ITMU.
