FIX: ASP.NET 1.1 does not support registration-free COM interop functionality in the virtual directory on a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2-based computer

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

On a Windows Server 2003 R2 Service Pack 2-based computer, ASP.NET 1.1 does not support the registration-free COM interop functionality in the virtual directory.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a regression in Windows Server 2003 R2 Service Pack 2 (SP2). Because of this regression, the side-by-side (SxS) assemblies activation context ignores registration-free COM interop settings at the AppDomain level in the virtual directory.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next .NET Framework 1.1 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Customer Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support (http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed on the computer.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

Registry information

To use one of the hotfixes in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

MORE INFORMATION

Before you install Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 on the computer, ASP.NET 1.1 uses the XML manifest file to load registration-free COM interop settings at the AppDomain level in the virtual directory. However, after you install the Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 on the computer, ASP.NET 1.1 only loads registration-free COM interop settings at the process level.
