Workflows are incorrectly run multiple times when you add a new document to a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library in Explorer view

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You configure one or both of the following workflow settings in a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library:
  • Setting 1:

You configure a workflow to have both of the following options enabled:
    • Start this workflow when a new item is created
    • Start this workflow when an item is changed
  • Setting 2:

You configure two separate workflows. One workflow has the Start this workflow when a new item is created option enabled. The other workflow has the Start this workflow when an item is changed option enabled.
You add a new document to the document library in Explorer view by using Internet Explorer. On the list next to the new document, you click Workflows under Completed Workflows.

In this scenario, the workflows are incorrectly run multiple times. For example, in Setting 1, the workflow is listed as having run two times. In Setting 2, both workflows are listed as having run.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add documents to the document library by using All Documents view instead of Explorer view. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Use Internet Explorer to log on to the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library.
  2. Click the list next to View, and then select All Documents.
  3. In All Documents view, click Upload to add new documents to the document library.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

  2. Create a new workflow for the document library. Make sure that you select the auto-start option for the new workflow.
  3. Log on to a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer that is running the Web Client service. Or, log on to a Windows Vista-based computer that is running the Web Client service.
  4. Use Internet Explorer to log on to the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library.
  5. Click the list next to View, and then select Explorer view.
  6. Perform a drag-and-drop operation or a copy-and-paste operation to move a document to the document library.
  7. Click the list next to the new document, and then click Workflows.
