You cannot use the "Password to Open" feature or the "Password to Modify" feature in Office when you use a mandatory profile to log on to the computer

SYMPTOMS

When you use a mandatory profile to log on to a computer, you cannot use the "Password to Open" feature or the "Password to Modify" feature in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002, in PowerPoint 2003, and in PowerPoint 2007.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft Office does not control how the mandatory profile manages the encryption. When you use a mandatory profile to log on to a computer, you do not have permission to access the encryption provider needed by Microsoft Office to encrypt the document.

This problem does not occur in Microsoft Word 97 or in Microsoft Word 2000.

Note Microsoft Word documents use Office-proprietary encryption technology that helps protect Word documents.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
