SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Office Accounting Professional or Microsoft Office Accounting Express for the first time after you install the program, you receive the following error message:
MOA has encountered a problem and needs to close. The format file sba.exe is invalid.

CAUSE

This problem occurs for one of the following reasons:
  • The shortcut for Accounting Professional or for Accounting Express is corrupted. See Resolution 1 in the "Resolution" section.
  • The installation files that you downloaded for Accounting Professional or for Accounting Express are incomplete. Or, some Accounting Professional components or some Accounting Express components are not completely installed. See Resolution 2 in the "Resolution" section.
  • The Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 is not installed. See Resolution 3 in the "Resolution" section.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the appropriate resolution.

Resolution 1: Create a new shortcut for Accounting Professional or for Accounting Express

  1. Locate the following folder:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business\Small Business Accounting 2007
  2. Double-click the SBA.exe file.
  3. Verify that you do not receive an error message.
  4. If you do not receive an error message and if you can start the program, create a new shortcut. To do this, right-click the SBA.exe file, point to Send To, and then click Desktop (create shortcut).
Note After you create the shortcut on the desktop, you can move the shortcut to any folder.

Resolution 2: Remove and then reinstall Accounting Professional or Accounting Express and all the components

  1. Remove Accounting Professional or Accounting Express. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. Install Accounting Professional or Accounting Express from the installation CD.

    Note If you have to download Accounting Professional or Accounting Express, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

  3. Install Service Pack 1 for Accounting Professional or Service Pack 1 for Accounting Express. To do this, follow one of these steps:
