When you install the release version of
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on a Windows Server 2003-based server, you receive the following error message during the
installation:
The
SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server
Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and
"Starting SQL Server Manually."
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
- The computer has Windows Internal Database Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed.
- You
start the SQL Server service by
using a low-privileged account. For example, you
use the NETWORK SERVICE account.
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

This hotfix contains only the files that are required to correct

that you must have to fully update a product to the latest

(UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To

How to install this hotfix
To install this hotfix, follow these steps:
- Uninstall the SQL Server Setup Support Files tool.
To do this, follow these steps:
- In Control Panel, open the Add or Remove Programs item.
- In the list of available programs, click
Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files, and then click
Remove.
- Extract the SqlSupport.msi file from the hotfix
package.
- Double-click the SqlSupport.msi file that you obtained in
step 2.
After you install this hotfix,
you can install the release version of SQL Server 2005.
Note When you install SQL Server 2005, you may receive a warning for
the
Edition Change Check item on the System
Configuration Check page. You can safely ignore this warning message
and continue the installation.
Microsoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
in the "Applies to" section.
Windows Internal Database is a relational data store for
Windows roles and features only. For example, Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
and Windows Server Update Services 3.0 use Windows Internal Database as a data
store.
