Error message when you click "PayPal Settings" on the "PayPal Payments" menu in Accounting Professional or in Accounting Express: "Failed to instantiate type"

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office Accounting Professional or in Microsoft Office Accounting Express, when you click PayPal Settings on the PayPal Payments menu, you may receive the following error message:
Failed to instantiate type.

CAUSE

This problem occurs for one of the following reasons:
  • The functionality of the PayPal Payments add-in program works incorrectly.
  • The PayPal Payments add-in program is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove the PayPal Payments add-in program, and then reinstall the PayPal Payments add-in program. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Remove the PayPal Payments add-in program. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Accounting Professional or Accounting Express, and then open the company.
    2. Click File, point to Utilities, and then click Add-in Manager.
    3. Click to select the check box for PayPal Payments, and then click Remove.
    4. Restart Accounting Professional or Accounting Express.
  2. Reinstall the PayPal Payments add-in program. To do this, use the appropriate method.

    Method 1: Install the add-in program by using the installation CD
    1. Close Accounting Professional or Accounting Express.
    2. Insert the Accounting Professional installation CD into the CD drive, or insert the Accounting Express installation CD into the CD drive.
    3. If the Setup wizard is displayed, click Cancel, and then click Yes.
    4. Click Start, and then click My Computer.
    5. Right-click the CD drive, and then click Open.
    6. Use the appropriate step:
      • On a Windows Vista-based computer, click Organize, and then click Folder and Search Options.
      • On a Windows XP-based computer, click Folder Options on the Tools menu.
    7. On the View tab, click to clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box in the Advanced settings pane.
    8. Use the appropriate step:
      • On a Windows Vista-based computer, click OK.
      • On a Windows XP-based computer, click Apply, and then click OK.
    9. Open the PayPal folder.
    10. Double-click the Microsoft Office Accounting PayPal Addin.msi file.
    11. To install the add-in program, follow the instructions in the Setup wizard.
    12. Start Accounting Professional or Accounting Express.
    13. On the File menu, point to Utilities, and then click Add-in Packs.
    14. In the Enabled column, click to select the check box for PayPal Payments. Then, click OK.
    15. If you are informed that the program must be restarted, click OK.
    16. On the File menu, click Exit.
    17. Restart Accounting Professional or Accounting Express.
    Method 2: Install the add-in program without the installation CD
    1. Close Accounting Professional or Accounting Express.
    2. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:

    3. Click Download.
    4. In the File Download - Security Warning dialog box, click Save.
    5. Select a folder in which you want to save the file, and then click Save.

      Note The size of the download file is 208 megabytes (MB).
    6. Locate the folder in which you saved the file in step e earlier in this section. Then, extract the MOA7024Express.exe file to the same folder.

      Note There are many applications that can be used to extract files. These applications may be installed on the computer. For example, you can use WinZip. To use WinZip, right-click the MOA7024Express.exe file, point to Open with WinZip, and then click Extract to.
    7. Use the appropriate step:
      • On a Windows Vista-based computer, click Organize, and then click Folder and Search Options.
      • On a Windows XP-based computer, click Folder Options on the Tools menu in the folder in which the files were extracted.
    8. On the View tab, click to clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box in the Advanced settings pane.
    9. Use the appropriate step:
      • On a Windows Vista-based computer, click OK.
      • On a Windows XP-based computer, click Apply, and then click OK.
    10. Open the PayPal folder.
    11. Double-click the Microsoft Office Accounting PayPal Addin.msi file.
    12. To install the add-in program, follow the instructions in the Setup wizard.
    13. Start Accounting Professional or Accounting Express.
    14. On the File menu, point to Utilities, and then click Add-in Packs.
    15. In the Enabled column, click to select the check box for PayPal Payments. Then, click OK.
    16. If you are informed that the program must be restarted, click OK.
    17. On the File menu, click Exit.
    18. Restart Accounting Professional or Accounting Express.
