SYMPTOMS

The SMS_Executive service (Smsexec.exe) process for Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 may crash when it tries to shut down. This behavior occurs when the process is experiencing a heavy load. Additionally, a Crash.log file is generated in the following folder:
%SystemDrive%\SMS\Logs
The Crash.log file contains a message that resembles the following:
Time = Date_Time
Service name = SMS_EXECUTIVE
Thread name = SMS_SOFTWARE_INVENTORY_PROCESSOR
Executable = path\smsexec.exe
Process ID = ID_number
Thread ID = ID_number
Instruction address = Memory_address
Exception = c0000005 (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION)
Description = "The thread tried to write to the virtual address Memory_address
for which it does not have the appropriate access."
Raised inside CService mutex = No
CService mutex description = ""

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a thread in the Smsexec.exe process takes more than 60 seconds to stop.
