SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista.
  • You try to install the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client package (Client.msi) from hotfix 941214.
In this scenario, the installation process fails, and you receive the following error message:
Program Compatibility Assistant
Windows requires a digitally signed driver - file: prepdrvAMD64.sys
Note This problem does not occur on client computers that are running an x86 version of Windows Vista.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Prepdrvamd64.sys and Prepdrvia64.sys files in the SMS 2003 Advanced Client package from hotfix 941214 are not digitally signed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the following hotfix before you install the SMS 2003 Advanced Client package from hotfix 941214.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
