The Print Spooler service consumes a large amount of memory because of unsuitable RPC caching in Windows Server 2008 and in Windows Vista

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

You have a Windows Server 2008-based print server.
This print server has many Windows Vista-based printer clients.

In this scenario, the memory usage of the Print Spooler service increases over time. For example, assume that you have several thousand printer clients that connect to the print server. Eventually, the print server becomes unresponsive, and you must restart the server to recover from this problem.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of remote procedure call (RPC) caching that is intended to increase performance. However, RPC caching also uses a large amount of memory.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed to apply this hotfix.

Note Windows Vista SP1 functionality is integrated into Windows Server 2008.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

The MANIFEST (.manifest) files and the MUM (.mum) files that are installed for each environment are listed separately. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files (attributes not listed) are signed by a Microsoft digital signature.
