Error message when you use cluster nodes that have Domain Controller roles in Windows Server 2008: "Computer cannot be managed"
Consider the following scenario:
- You are using a computer that is running a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise cluster.
- The cluster has two physical nodes.
- Both cluster nodes have Domain Controller roles.
- You try to create or to manage file shares by using the "Share and Storage Management" Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in (Storagemgmt.msc).
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
Computer cannot be managed because it is running an operating system which is not supported by Share and Storage Management. Share and Storage Management can be used to manage Windows Server 2008 or later.
This issue occurs because the Storagemgmt.msc tool does not correctly detect operating system roles in Windows Server 2008.
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.
For server message block (SMB) shares
- Use Windows Explorer to create or to manage local file shares instead of using the "Share and Storage Management" MMC snap-in.
- Use Windows Explorer or the Cluster Administrator tool (Cluadmin.msc) to create or to manage cluster file shares instead of using the "Share and Storage Management" MMC snap-in.
For network file system (NFS) shares
- Use the Nfsshare.exe utility to create or to manage local file shares instead of using the "Share and Storage Management" MMC snap-in.
- Use Windows Explorer or the Cluster Administrator tool (Cluadmin.msc) to create or to manage cluster file shares instead of using the "Share and Storage Management" MMC snap-in.
APPLIES TO
- Windows Server 2008 Enterprise
- Windows Server 2008 Datacenter
- Windows Server 2008 Datacenter without Hyper-V
- Windows Server 2008 Enterprise without Hyper-V
- Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems

and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
