SYMPTOMS

When you have a Windows Vista-based computer that is connected to a USB optical disc drive, and you resume the computer from Standby, you may receive a error message that resembles one of the following error messages:
STOP: 0x000000E4 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
STOP: 0x0000000A (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
Notes
  • The parameters in the error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • This issue may occur on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), or Windows Server 2008.
  • Not all "0x000000E4" or "0x0000000A" Stop errors are caused by this problem.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a race condition in the Usbstor.sys component.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

This hotfix requires Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 to be installed on the computer.

Restart requirement

You have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
