The "PREINST /SYNCPARENT" command replicates discovery and inventory data and triggers a software inventory resynchronization in SMS 2003

SYMPTOMS

You run a PREINST /SYNCPARENT command to force all site control images in a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site database to propagate at the same time up to a parent site. However, SMS performs the following actions in addition to replicating site control files:
  • SMS replicates discovery and inventory data to the parent site.
  • SMS creates resynchronization requests for all SMS client computers.
These actions may affect the performance of SMS and may also cause network congestion.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the /syncparent switch that is included with the Preinst.exe command performs all actions that are required when you attach an SMS site to an existing SMS hierarchy. This is expected behavior.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Run the PREINST /SYNCPARENT command during non-peak hours.
  2. Remove the "{sitecode}.sha" files that are generated by the SMS_SQL_MONITOR process before the SiteCode.sha files are processed by the threads of the SMS_EXECUTIVE service. This step prevents inventory data transmission to the parent site, and it prevents triggering of client resynchronization operations. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Stop the SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER service.
    2. Stop the SMS_EXECUTIVE service.
    3. Run the PREINST /SYNCPARENT command.
    4. Verify that the SMS_SQL_MONITOR has created theSiteCode.sha files in the following directories:
      • SMS\inboxes\colleval.box
      • SMS\inboxes\ddm.box
      • SMS\inboxes\distmgr.box
      • SMS\inboxes\offermgr.box
      • SMS\inboxes\swmproc.box
    5. Delete the SiteCode.sha files.
    6. Start the SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER service.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use the PREINST /SYNCPARENT command to replicate site control files to a parent site, the command sets the site hierarchy attachment trigger that causes the SMS_SQL_MONITOR process to create SiteCode.SHA files in the following directories:
  • SMS\inboxes\colleval.box
  • SMS\inboxes\ddm.box
  • SMS\inboxes\distmgr.box
  • SMS\inboxes\offermgr.box
  • SMS\inboxes\swmproc.box
The .SHA file that is located in the "SMS\inboxes\ddm.box" directory causes the SMS_DISCOVERY_DATA_MANAGER process to create <sitecode>.SHA files in the following directories:
  • SMS\inboxes\dataldr.box
  • SMS\inboxes\sinv.box
This behavior causes the following actions:
  • Hardware inventory is forwarded to the parent site.
  • Discovery Data is forwarded to the parent site.
  • Resynchronization of hardware inventory is triggered for SMS client computers.
  • Resynchronization of software inventory and file collection is triggered for SMS client computers.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
