SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. In Systems Management Server 2003, you create a new package on the central site in a two-level hierarchy (that is, a hierarchy that has a central site and a child primary site). Then, you create a distribution point on the central site and a distribution point on the child primary site. When you try to remove both distribution points from the package on the central site, the package is removed from the distribution point of the central site. However, the package is not removed from the distribution point of the child primary site.

This problem occurs if the hotfix from one of the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles is installed on all site servers in the two-level hierarchy:
936465  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=936465/ ) In a three-tier SMS 2003 hierarchy, packages may not be decompressed or copied to the distribution point of the secondary site
950306  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=950306/ ) In large SMS 2003 hierarchies that have many sites, site-to-site replication slows down
Note This problem occurs first on servers that have the hotfix that Knowledge Base article 936465 describes installed.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Configure a two-level hierarchy. That is, configure a central site and a child primary site.
  2. Install the hotfix that Knowledge Base article 936465 describes on both site servers.
  3. Create a new package on the central site, and then add one distribution point for the central site and one distribution point for the child primary site.
  4. Make sure that the package is on both distribution points.
  5. Remove both distribution points from the package by using the managed distribution point wizard in the SMS administration console of the central site.
The package is removed from the distribution point on the central site. However, the package is not removed from the distribution point on the child primary site.
