Error message when you try to add a member server to an Application Center 2000 cluster: "Error: The cluster operation returned a failure. 0xC0140003"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to add a member server to an existing Microsoft Application Center 2000 cluster, you receive the following error message:
Error:
The cluster operation returned a failure. 0xC0140003
This server is already part of a cluster. Try a different servrname (0xC0140003)

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Internet Information Services (IIS) metabase includes details about clusters that existed previously.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must use a command to clear the old information from the IIS metabase. You must run this command on the member server that you want to add. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. At a command prompt on the member server, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    AC Cluster /Clean
Important Make sure that you do not use this command on the cluster controller.
  2. Add the member server to the cluster.
