Article ID: 955635 - Last Review: July 25, 2008 - Revision: 1.0 The page file size may become alternately too small or too large when you start Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista if there is no available free disk space, and the page file size is managed by the systemConsider the following scenario:
- On a computer that is running Windows
Server 2008 or Windows Vista, a page file is configured on a hard disk drive.
- The page file is configured to use the System managed
size option.
- The free disk space is not enough to hold the page
file.
In this scenario, you find that the page file size is
alternately too small or too large at each startup. Or, no page file is
generated. Also, because of the incorrect page file size, a dump file may not
be generated. Additionally, the following event error is logged in the
System event log: Source: volmgr
Event ID: 49
Level: Error
Description:
Configuring the Page file for crash dump failed. Make
sure there is a page file on the boot partition and that is large enough to
contain all physical memory. This problem occurs when the Smss.exe process calculates
the free disk space and the ideal page file size during the startup process. During the startup process, the
page file size is managed by using the System managed size option. If there is not enough free disk space, the Smss.exe process
deletes the existing page file. Then, the Smss.exe process tries to re-create
the page file. However, the Smss.exe process does not correctly calculate free
disk space after it deletes the existing page file. Hotfix information A
supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended
to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this
hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix
might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected
by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that
contains this hotfix. If the hotfix is available for download, there
is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base
article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service
and Support to obtain the hotfix. Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required,
you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs
will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for

Hotfix replacement information This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes. File information The English version of this hotfix has the file
attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table.
The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time
(UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To
find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time
Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control
Panel. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes- The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM,
SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file
version numbers as shown in the following table:

- Service Pack 1 is integrated into Windows Server 2008.
Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files
have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
- The MANIFEST (.manifest) and MUM files (.mum)
that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM and MANIFEST files and
the associated security catalog (.cat) files are very important in maintaining the
state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not
listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
