Consider the following scenario:
- Windows Server 2008 or a Windows Vista SP1
is running in a virtual machine.
- The computer that is running the virtual machine has multiple processors.
In this scenario, the virtual machine may restart unexpectedly. Additionally,
you may receive the following Stop error code:
This problem occurs because of a race condition between the
RxCompleteRequest() thread and the
RxCancelRoutine() thread in the Redirected Drive Buffering SubSystem (RDBSS)
driver.
The stop code error is triggered when the system completes an
I/O request packet (IRP) that is waiting to be canceled. This can occur
because, while the
RxCancelRoutine() thread waits for the RDBSS spinlock, the
RxCompleteRequest() thread may still complete the IRP. Therefore, the
RxCancelRoutine() thread tries to retrieve the RxContext from the IRP. However,
because the IRP is no longer valid, the system generates the stop
error.
Hotfix information
A
supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended
to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this
hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix
might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected
by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that
contains this hotfix.
