Health Monitoring reports may not always display or e-mail reports may not be received on a server that is running Small Business Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You click the Monitoring and Reporting link in the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 console. After about 5 minutes, you receive the following error message:
The page cannot be displayed

An error occurred on the page you are trying to view.
------------------------------------------------------

To work around this problem, perform the following steps. After each step, try again to access the page.
* Ensure that the MSSQL$SBSMONITORING service is started.
* Ensure that the server is not low on memory or disk space.
* Restart the server.
* Verify that the server is functional and that there are no system-wide problems.
* Run the Set Up Monitoring Reports and Alerts task in the Server Management Monitoring and Reporting taskpad.
Additionally, the following error message is logged in the Application log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ServerStatusReports
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
Server Status Report:
URL: http://localhost/monitoring/perf.aspx?reportMode=0

If you chose to have the Health Monitoring reports e-mailed to you, the reports do not arrive when scheduled. Additionally, you may receive an e-mail report that resembles the following:

Server Performance Report

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) API query exceeds the allocated time during report generation.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Make sure that the server meets the minimum hardware requirements for Windows Server Update Services 3.0. For more information, visit the following Microsoft TechNet Web site:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708091.aspx (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708091.aspx)
  2. Do not run or schedule high resource demand processes or jobs and run the report at the same time. For example, do not run Disk Defragmentation when you run the report.
  3. Minimize the size of the WSUS database by removing any updates that you do not require. There are many drivers published that may not apply to your network. Consider manually updating drivers and opting out of driver download to the server if it does not require it. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft Windows Server Update Services 3.0.
    2. In the list on the left side, click Options, and then click Products and Classifications.
    3. On the Classifications tab, click to clear the Drivers check box.
  4. Regularly run the WSUS Cleanup Wizard. Select the options for removing expired updates and unused update and update revisions. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft Windows Server Update Services 3.0.
    2. In the list on the left side, click Options and then click Server Cleanup Wizard.
    3. Select the options that you want, and then click Next.

MORE INFORMATION

As updates are released to WSUS, the size of the WSUS database grows. Performance issues may occur when one or more of the following are true:
  • The WSUS database is not maintained.
  • Other processes compete for resources.
  • The server hardware does not meet the minimum hardware requirements.
By default, Windows Small Business Server 2003 (Windows SBS) Update Services downloads most update classifications and types. Performance is improved when updates are limited to only those that are required by the network.
