You cannot change the file properties for a Word document, Excel workbook, or PowerPoint presentation when the file in posted on a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library or on a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 document library
Consider the following scenario:
- You create a new Microsoft Word document, Microsoft Excel workbook, or Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.
- You add a custom property to the file.
- You upload the file to a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 document library or to a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 document library.
- In the document library, you click the file and then click Edit Properties.
- You type a new value for the property and then click OK.
In this scenario, the value for the file property may not change as expected.
This problem occurs when all the following conditions are true:
- The custom property that you added has the same name as a built-in property. For example, you create a custom property that is named "Subject."
- A column in the document library has the same name as the custom property and the built-in property. For example, you create a column in the document library that is named "Subject."
To work around this problem, check out the file from the document library and remove the custom property that has the same name as the built-in property. Then, check the file back into the document library.
Steps to reproduce
- On a SharePoint 3.0 Team Site, click Shared Documents.
- Click Settings, and then click Create Column.
- In the Column name box, type Subject.
- Click Multiple lines of text, and then click OK.
- Create a new Word 2007 document.
- Click the Office Button, point to Prepare, and then click Properties.
- Click Document Properties, and then click Advanced Properties.
- On the Custom tab, type Subject in the Name box.
- Type custom in the Value box, click Add, and then click OK.
- On the SharePoint 3.0 Team Site, click Shared Documents.
- Click Upload, and then click Upload Document.
- In the Name box, type to path of the Word 2007 file that you created in step 5.
- Click OK two times.
- In the Shared Documents document library, click the file that you uploaded, and then click Edit Properties.
- Type Changed on server in the Subject box, and then click OK.
In the Shared Documents document library, notice that the value did not change. The value in the
Subject column is still
custom.
