On a Windows Vista-based or a Windows Server 2008-based computer, you disable the Fast User Switching feature. Later, if the password expires when the computer is locked, you cannot change the password. When you try to unlock the computer, you receive the following error message:However, when the Fast User Switching feature is disabled, the Switch User option does not appear on the logon screen. Then, you have to restart the computer to change the password.

A hotfix is available to resolve this problem. After you apply the hotfix, you can see the Switch User option, and you can switch users in this specific scenario even if the Fast User Switching feature is disabled. This hotfix does not enable Fast User Switching in any other scenarios.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
