Consider the following scenario that occurs on a Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008-based computer:

1. You create a file protocol-based hyperlink that points to a 2007 Microsoft Office system file on a file server.
2. You add a bookmark by using a number sign (#) to make sure that you can load the 2007 Office system file and that you can scroll to the location that contains the bookmark:
   
   #bookmark_name
   
   Note The placeholder bookmark_name is the name of the bookmark in the file to which you want to link.

In this scenario, when you click the hyperlink, the application that is associated with the 2007 Office system file may not start. Additionally, you may receive the following error message in the application that contains the hyperlink:For example, you create the following URL for the hyperlink in an Outlook e-mail message:The URL is displayed as follows: In this example, when you click the hyperlink to access the document.docx file, the word.exe process may not start, and you may receive the error message. Additionally, if you copy the URL to the address bar in Windows Explorer, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:Note This problem does not occur in either of the following scenarios:

• The file uses pre-2007 Microsoft Office system file name extensions, such as .doc, .xls, .ppt.
• You click the hyperlink within the application that is associated with the 2007 Office system file. For example, if you click the hyperlink in the Word document that was mentioned earlier, everything works fine.

This problem occurs because the 2007 Office system file name extensions, such as .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx, are not included in the list of file types that can contain a fragment. Therefore, the fragment is not identified as a fragment. Windows Explorer or other applications, such as Outlook, search for the file that includes the fragment on the storage. Because this file does not exist, the error occurs.

To resolve this problem, install the hotfix that is discussed in this section. This hotfix adds support for the following file-types that can have bookmarks through FILE protocol:

• .docm
• .docx
• .dotm
• .dotx
• .xlsb
• .xlsm
• .xlsx
• .xltx
• .xltm
• .potx
• .potm
• .ppsx
• .ppsm
• .pptx
• .pptm

Hotfix information

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes

The .manifest files and the .mum files that are installed in each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. These files and their associated .cat (security catalog) files are critical to maintaining the state of the updated component. The .cat files are signed with a Microsoft digital signature. The attributes of these security files are not listed.
