Error message when you use the Netsh utility together with the init restore syntax to initiate a restoration of a WINS database in Windows Server 2008: "The system cannot find the path specified"

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running the RTM version of Windows Server 2008, you use the Netsh utility together with the init restore syntax to initiate a restoration of a Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) database. After you specify the target server name and the path from which you want to restore the server, you may receive the following error message:
Wins Server Initialize Wins Database Restore failed with Error:
The system cannot find the path specified.
This issue occurs even if you specify the correct path and the backup location is valid.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the WINS extension to the Netsh utility (Winsmon.dll) incorrectly parses the command to locate the backup data. In this case, the last character of the command is dropped and the path becomes invalid.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the WINS Management console to back up and restore WINS Databases.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
