Error message when you upgrade Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2: "These Windows features might not work properly after the upgrade"

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2, you receive the following error message:
These Windows features might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend turning off features before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "turn Windows features on or off".

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the release version of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 are not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Wouldn't a better way to resolve the issue be to install Service pack 2 or later for WSS 3? Microsoft's SharePoint Updates Center on Technet is here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/sharepoint/bb735839.aspx
