Article ID: 968002 - Last Review: January 20, 2012 - Revision: 7.0 Error message 0x80070424 when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites to install updates When you try to connect to Microsoft Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or update Microsoft Security Essentials, you receive the following error code: Or On a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you may encounter one or more of the following issues: - The Automatic Updates feature is turned off in Security Center and you cannot turn this feature on.
- The Automatic Updates service is missing from the Services snap-in.
- The registry is missing one or both of the following registry subkeys:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WUAUSERV
This issue occurs if a service that is required for Windows Update or for Microsoft Update is not registered.
To resolve this issue, follow the steps listed in the methods below, starting with method 1: Method 1: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. The Automatically diagnose and fix common problems with Windows Update troubleshooter may automatically fix the problem described in this article.

If the Windows Update Troubleshooter did not resolve the issue, go to Method 2. Method 2: Run the Fix it to restart necessary services and register additional DLL'sTo have us fix this problem for you, go to the " Fix it for me" section. Register the Windows Update filesIf you are running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows 2000, follow these steps:- Click Start, click Run, type notepad and then click OK.
- Copy the following commands, and then paste them into the Notepad window.

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL /S
REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL /S

- Save the register.bat file to the desktop.
- Double-click the register.bat file to register the Windows Update files.
- Try to install updates again.

If the Automatic Update Service does not appear in the list of services, follow the steps that are listed in Method 3.
Method 3: Restart Windows Services
0x80070424 error message may also occur when the following services are stopped. You may resolve this error message by follow these steps: - Click Start, type services.msc in Start Search or Search programs and files, and then press Enter.
- If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
- Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service and check the Status.
- If the Status lists Stopped, right click Background Intelligent Transfer Serviceis and then click Start in the popup menu.
- Locate Windows Update and check the Status.
- If the Status lists Stopped, right click Windows Update and then click Start in the popup menu.
- Locate Workstation and check the Status.
- If the Status lists Stopped, right click Workstation and then click Start in the popup menu.
- Close the Services.
Method 4: Download and install Windows Update Agent Download and install Windows Update Agent.

Method 5: Reinstall Automatic Updates on a computer that is running Windows XP SP2If you are using a computer that is running Windows XP SP2, and your issue has not been resolved, try the following steps:

- Click Start, click Run, type explorer, and then click OK.
- Locate the following folder:
%windir% \inf Note The %windir% placeholder represents the path of the WINDOWS system folder. Typically, C:\WINDOWS is the path of the WINDOWS system folder.
The inf folder is a hidden folder. To view the inf folder, follow these steps: - On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
- In the Advanced settings list, click Show hidden files and folders under Hidden files and folders.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
- Double-click the inf folder, right-click au, and then click Install.
- Click Browse. Locate and then click the %windir% \ServicePackFiles\i386 folder if the following conditions are true:
- You installed Windows XP SP2 from a Windows XP SP2 CD that included SP2 as part of the base installation.
- You downloaded and installed Windows XP SP2 from the Microsoft Web site.
- Windows XP SP2 was included with the computer.
Note If the ServicePackFiles folder is not present on the computer, you can copy the files from a slipstreamed Windows XP SP2 installation CD. - Click OK to copy the files.
- Change the setting on the computer not to display hidden files and folders. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
- In the Advanced settings list, click Do not show hidden files and folders under Hidden files and folders.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
- Restart the computer.
