Executing a stored procedure on a linked server through a synonym using SqlCommand returns "A severe error occurred on the current command"

If you execute a stored procedure on a linked server through a synonym using SqlCommand with CommandType.StoredProcedure set, a SqlException is thrown with the following message:Â
    A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.
Note This only fails if the CommandType is set to CommandType.StoredProcedure and the stored procedure is defined on a linked server. Removing either condition will eliminate the problem.
Synonyms are a new feature introduced in SQL Server 2005 and later versions. They help provide a layer of naming isolation between real database objects and the names that the client application sees.
