A discussion board item does not index when a crawl is run against the site if the subject contains a period (.)

SYMPTOMS

If the subject of a discussion board item contains a period (.), the item does not index when a crawl is run against the site. The following error message appears in the crawl log:
Content for this URL is excluded by the server because of a no-index attribute.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, apply both the following updates:
  • 968857  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=968857/ ) Description of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 hotfix package (Sts.msp): April 28, 2009
  • 968859  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=968859/ ) Description of the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 hotfix package (Coreserver.msp): April 30, 2009

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
