RAPID PUBLISHING

RAPID PUBLISHING ARTICLES PROVIDE INFORMATION DIRECTLY FROM WITHIN THE MICROSOFT SUPPORT ORGANIZATION. THE INFORMATION CONTAINED HEREIN IS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO EMERGING OR UNIQUE TOPICS, OR IS INTENDED SUPPLEMENT OTHER KNOWLEDGE BASE INFORMATION.

Symptom

Opening a SharePoint site in SharePoint Designer 2007 generates a dialog box:

"You can open and edit 'http://[site]' as a live Web site, or you can copy the files to your computer for editing and publish the changes to the server when you are finished."

After selecting "Edit live Web site now", the icons for the folders do not look as they usually do, and there is no option to create workflows. For example, unique folder types like Document Library and Workflows look like normal folders instead of the orange icon or workflow icon. Also may receive the following error message when attempting to open a workflow:

Workflow features are not available for this web. Please move your workflow file to a web that supports workflow in order to open it.

Cause

If you disable Client Integration in Windows SharePoint Services 3 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 at the web application level when trying to use SharePoint Designer to create workflows this will not be possible and the "SharePoint Content" option in SharePoint Designer will be grayed out.

"Use Client Integration Features" site permissions are dependent with the "Use Remote Interfaces" site permissions. Disabling one of these disables also the other.

Resolution

  1. Click the Start button, point to All Programs, then point to Microsoft Office Server, and then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
  2. On the Central Administration home page, click Application Management.
  3. On the Application Management page, in the Application Security section, click Authentication providers.
  4. On the Authentication Providers section, click on Default (or relevant) zone.
  5. Under Client Integration, change option to Enable Client Integration to Yes.
  6. Close and re-open SharePoint Designer. Reconnect to website, and now it should work as normal.

If the existing web application needs to retain the settings without the client integration you could also choose to extend that web application with a new IIS site.
