Event Handlers cannot be triggered by an anonymous user

When trying to perform an action on a SharePoint list as an Anonymous user you may see the following error message:
An unexpected error has occurred.
System.OutOfMemoryException: Server Out Of Memory
In WSS 3.0 and Office SharePoint Server 2007, event handlers cannot be triggered by anonymous users.
Consider the following Scenario:
- Create a new web app with anonymous access enabled.
- Create a new custom list on your new web app.
- Edit the list permissions so anonymous users can add/edit/delete items.
- Create an ItemAdding event handler that does nothing and connect it to the new list.
- Create a new list item as a regular user.
- Note that there is no error message.
- Create a new list item as an anonymous user.
Results: An unexpected error has occurred. System.OutOfMemoryException: Server Out Of Memory
