Article ID: 971524 - Last Review: June 15, 2009 - Revision: 1.0 FIX: An access violation occurs when you run a DELETE statement or an UPDATE statement in the Itanium-based versions of SQL Server 2000 after you install security update MS09-004Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release. Consider the following scenario: - You install SQL Server 2000 on a 64-bit Itanium architecture-based (IA-64) computer.
- You install security update MS09-004, which is described in the following KB article:
960083 Â
(http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=960083/
)
MS09-004: Description of the security update for SQL Server 2000 QFE and for MSDE 2000: February 10, 2009
- You run a DELETE statement or an UPDATE statement on a table that contains a foreign key constraint.
In this scenario, the query fails and an access violation occurs. Hotfix information A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language. Prerequisites
To apply this hotfix, you must have SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 installed.

To work around this issue, remove the foreign key constraint from the table. You can use a DELETE trigger or an UPDATE trigger to implement the constraint. Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This hotfix does not contain any new code fixes to address the issue. This hotfix rebuilds the previous Itanium-based package that causes the access violation in the scenario that is described in the Symptoms section.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
