Consider the following scenario in the Microsoft .NET
Framework 2.0:
- You have a Microsoft ASP.NET Web page in which the AspCompat attribute is set to True.
- You submit the form data or the querystring data by using a
postback event. Additionally, the data contains a TAB character.
- You try to access Active Server Pages (ASP) intrinsic objects by using COM
components.
In this scenario, a
failure
occurs,
and you receive the following error message:
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution
of the current Web request. Please review the stack trace for more information
about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception
Details: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Catastrophic failure
(Exception from HRESULT: 0x8000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED))
This problem occurs when
the form data or querystring data is marshaled from the managed code to the
native code. In
this situation, the data is encoded as a string.
Additionally, the TAB character is used to
separate different entries. However, when the data
already has entry values that contain a TAB character, the newly introduced TAB character
corrupts the data in
the native code during
the decoding process.

To work around this problem, either avoid calling the
AspCompatRequest::get_Form method in COM components or manually encode tab characters in the input data.
Microsoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
