SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2), you receive the following Stop error message:
STOP: 0x00000024 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)

NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
Note
  • The parameter in this error message may vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "STOP 0x00000024" error messages are caused by the problem that is described in this article.
  • Because of the generality of memory corruption problems, we recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Services to determine whether this problem is occurring or not.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the file system driver Ntfs.sys incorrectly accesses the invalid volume control block (VCB) that is being unmounted.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support (http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.
