The File Server Resource Manager on a server that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 R2 does not send e-mail notifications to the SMTP server

SYMPTOMS

On a server that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 R2, the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) does not send e-mail notifications to the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server.

Additionally, the following error message is logged in the Application log:
Event ID: 8201
Source: SRMSVC
Description:
File server Resource Manager Service Error: Unexpected error

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the following two conditions are true:
  • File system quotas are exceeded, or file screening violations occur.
  • The File Server Resource Manager service (SrmSvc) uses a SMTP server to send notifications and storage reports in e-mails.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you must set up the File Server Resource Manager again. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Set up a share resource that has the required dependencies such as network name and physical disk.
  2. Start the File Server Resource Manager.
  3. Right-click File Server Resource Manager (FSRM), and then click Connect to Another Computer.
  4. Type the network name that you used in step 1.
  5. When you are connected, open Quota Management.
  6. Under Actions, click Create Quota.
  7. Type the path of the share resource that you created in step 1. Or, click Browse to add the path of the share resource.
  8. Select the kind of quota template that you want to use.
  9. Click Create.
