The FSRM quota report for the system root folder shows a smaller available size than Windows Explorer

SYMPTOMS

You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2. When you view the File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) quota report for the system root folder, the FSRM quota report shows a smaller available size than is shown in Windows Explorer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of the following factors:
  • The FSRM quota report does not account for the page file when it calculates used storage.
  • The FSRM quota report accounts for hard links by using their logical size. Therefore, in the FSRM quota report, two hard links to a 1 kilobyte (KB) file consume 2 KB of space.

    Because the system volume has many hard links that target multiple gigabytes (GB) of files, the FSRM quota report shows different amounts of available space when you run the report on the system root folder than is shown in Windows Explorer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the folder on which you run the quota report from the system root folder to a root folder that is not a system root folder.
