Some drivers no longer function after you install SQL Server 2005
The third-party products that this article discusses are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, about the performance or reliability of these products.
Consider the following scenario:
- You install an update for third-party software. For example, you install an update for a third-party printer driver.
- You install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on the same computer after you install the update.
- After you complete both installations, you restart the computer.
In this scenario, the third-party software no longer functions correctly.
Note Microsoft is aware that this problem affects updates for some Canon printer drivers.
This problem occurs because the SQL Server 2005 Setup program deletes some files that are installed by the update. This problem occurs when you do not restart the computer between the update installation and the SQL Server 2005 installation.
Notes- You do not receive a notification that files are deleted.
- The files that are deleted are listed in the registry under the PendingFileRenameOperations registry subkey.
After you install SQL Server 2005, uninstall the third-party software update by using
Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Then, reinstall the third-party software update by using the package that the program vendor provides.
To prevent this problem on other computers in your environment, restart computers after you install software updates and before you install SQL Server 2005.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
Consider the following example scenario for a third-party printer driver:
- You install an update for a third-party printer driver.
- The update installation requires you to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
- You decide to restart the computer later.
- You install any edition of SQL Server on the same computer.
- The SQL Server Setup program deletes some files that were installed as part of the update.
- You try to print.
In this scenario, you cannot print because the printer driver files no longer exist.
