Videos in PowerPoint 2010 presentations do not play in PowerPoint 2007 or earlier versions

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

When you run a Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 slide show in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 or in earlier versions, any videos that are in the presentation do not play. Instead, the video displays a black poster frame instead of the original poster frame.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because, when you insert a video into a PowerPoint 2010 presentation, PowerPoint 2010 now embeds the video into the presentation. PowerPoint 2007 Service Pack 1 and earlier versions do not support playing embedded videos in a presentation.

This is a change from earlier versions of PowerPoint. In those earlier versions, when you inserted a video into a presentation, the presentation linked to the file instead of embedding the video.

RESOLUTION

Use the PowerPoint Viewer

You can play videos in a PowerPoint 2010 presentation by using the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer. You can download the PowerPoint Viewer by visiting the following Microsoft Download Center Page:

Update PowerPoint 2007 to the 2007 Microsoft Office suite Service Pack 2

The 2007 Microsoft Office suite Service Pack 2 updates PowerPoint 2007 so that it can play embedded videos in presentations that are created by PowerPoint 2010.
