Consider the following scenario:

• You have a query or a stored procedure that uses a temporary table. The temporary table has a column of XML data type.
• A Primary XML Index is created on the XML column.
• There are multiple processes that are calling the query or the stored procedure at the same time.
• You try to drop the temporary table.

In this scenario, when you try to run the query or the stored procedure, a deadlock occurs.

XML indexes are internally handled as indexed views. On a temporary table that contains an XML index, SQL Server must lock the ID for the indexed view that is created for the XML index. However, this lock conflicts with the operation that drops the temporary table.
