Consider the following scenario. You create an ASP.NET 2.0 web-based application. The web-based application receives many requests from mobile devices. After you run the application for some time, the memory consumption of the W3wp.exe process grows very large. Additionally, you experience "out of memory" errors on the web server.

This issue occurs because the MobileCapabilities object does not expire from the cache as expected.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

• Windows XP
• Windows Server 2003
• Windows Vista SP2
• Windows Server 2008 SP2

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix if any of the affected files are being used when you install it.

You may not have to restart the system if you close all ASP.NET websites before you install this hotfix.

Note The hotfix for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 is built by using the KB number 888419. When you apply the hotfix, you will be prompted with a window that says:

Click OK to install the following Windows software update Security Update for Windows (KB980842)

In this situation, click OK to continue. After the installation completes, you will see an entry named “Hotfix for Microsoft Windows (KB888419)” in the Installed Updates menu in the Programs and Features item in Control Panel.
